Nick competed in the Australian Mountain Running Champs, over the weekend for the very first time and represented NSW, placING 10th with N.S.W coming 2nd in the teams event! The race was 11k up Mt Tennant which has an elevation of 1,375m wit some extremely steep sections. Mt Tennant is situated not far outside of Canberra and is situated on the basin of a stunning gully which looks like a postcard out of Europe. The mountain was almost double the height of Mt Canobolas and tested Nicks mental and physical strengths. Being an asthma sufferer for almost his whole life, this was torture for Nick as the air got thin towards the summit of the mountain. Nothing could have prepared him for how tough this event was but now he knows how hard he will have to train leading up to next years event as well as work on his quad and gluts strength.
Nick was stoked to reach the top and is now preparing for the World Trail champs in Hawaii in December! Congrats to his UTS NORTHS club athletes Ruairdh Macdonald and Kate Hobbs on their excellent results too.
Nick would like to thank his coach Ron Bendall and his amazing sponsors Revive Therapeutic Massage, H2COCO and Hot Design!

Nick recently made the NSW Team after his solid run in the NSW Mountain running championships at Mt Canobolas, Orange. He finished the 11k race in 55:25 which was well under his target time of 1 hour. The course was up hill from the start to the finish with some very steep sections running to the top of three peaks. Nicks UTS Norths team also won the Gold Medal for the teams event!
This was Nicks first year competing in the grueling Mountain Champs and he looks forward to running at Mt Tennant, ACT for the Australian Mountain Championships. Nick is getting back into fine form and is looking forward to a successful 2014 winter season along with completing his Masters degree in secondary education, whilst working at Nike and coaching at Knox.
Since January, I have been competing in the Sydney Trail Series at the Manly Dam. The Sydney Trail series has been established to provide great monthly trail running races to both Sydneysiders and those from further afield. The trail series have been a challenging step up from the Athletics track which i have been competing on for the past couple of years. The trails require much more attention to where you place your feet, especially on uneven ground featured throughout the trails.
The support the Sydney Trail Series organisers gave to all the distance runners was very motivating and the prizes too were definitely an incentive to aim for the top 3 each week.
Trail running is a great way to go for your long runs as it is interesting being in a bush setting, constantly turning corners and running up hills to enter new territory which keeps you on your toes. Trail running definitely strengthens your entire body, especially the core and calves and quads because of the uneven ground and the steep hills which were common in the Manly Dam trail. Through doing the trail series, my fitness levels have increased and inspired me to take on the new challenge of mountain running, where i will be contesting the NSW Mountain Running Champs in Orange.
I havent competed in cross-country seriously like this since highschool back in 05 so it is exciting for me to start finding this renewed passion for distance running. I am preferring trail running to the track because of how interesting it is and i love the fact you get to be surrounded by rainforests and interesting surroundings. Each Trail series i have improved and i am sure when i get back on the track next season i will be flying high.

Nick received Club Person of the year for his track and field results, dedication to his studies and his work for the UTS Norths Athletics Club as uniform manager and uniform designer!
PICTURED: Team Superheroes (David Byrnes, Victoria Mitchell, and Ben St Laurence) at the Ryde Rollercoaster run helping raise money for Giant Steps, a school for children with Autism (http://www.giantsteps.net.au/). Great to be part of this very talented middle distance team. We won the 4 x 800 relay and i finished 3rd in the individual race. Killer Hills

Hey All, The Wolverine featuring Hugh Jackman is now out in the cinemas! I am featured in the opening scene, playing a Prisoner of War (POW) escaping from the Japanese Prison Camp before the Atomic Bomb is dropped near by. Its a great film and it was awesome having the movie filmed by FOX mostly here in Australia. It was also great to star along side Australia’s biggest movie star- Hugh Jackman. Get your claws into it! The Wolverine- Out NOW!
